Luso-Brazilian
firm VINIBRASIL wins FINEP award for Technological Innovation
Palácio do Planalto, Brasília, Brazil,
12 December 2006 – Luso-Brazilian firm VINIBRASIL won a
FINEP Award for Technological Innovation in the Processes category.
VINIBRASIL, Vinhos do Brasil (Wines from Brazil) is a wine producer
on the 8º South line of latitude, the result of joint investment
by Brazil’s EXPAND and the Portuguese firm DÃO SUL,
based on a technological partnership that aims to study the physiological
adaptation of the grapevine in the tropics. It is noteworthy that
scientific research holds that viticulture between the 37º
North and 37º South parallels is theoretically impossible.
With the support of the Agency for Innovation (Portugal) and
in partnership with the Higher Institute of Agronomy (Lisbon),
Dão Sul has promoted a research project on irrigation management
and the eco-physiological study of the grapevine in different
edaphic and climatic conditions. The results of this project (representing
process innovation at a global level) were the basis for the international
distinction obtained.
The ceremony, attended by the Vice-President of the Republic,
José de Alencar, the Brazilian Minister of Science and
Technology, Sergio Resende, and the President of FINEP, Odilon
Marcuzzo, was designed to honour, recognise and encourage innovative
work by Brazilian companies. The national award was preceded by
